“Rule of art: Can’t kills creativity.” Camille Paglia
Less than a month from now, January 16, my exhibit will open at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji, Iowa with a reception on that evening from 5 – 7 p.m. It’s a real honor for me to have an exhibit at the Pearson and I remember visiting the gallery when I farmed and marveling at the fact that rural Iowa would have such a beautiful facility. I was even more entranced when I found that they had work by Andrew Wyeth in their private collection. He’s one of my favorite artists and I’m sure that looking at his work had some effect on my leanings in photography.
Be that as it may, I started putting this exhibit together on the first of November as I wanted to have plenty of time without rushing around like a chicken with my head cut off. At this point I’m ready with the work, but still have to conjure up some sort of gallery talk.
I’m not much of a fan about artist statements as it’s my opinion that the artists work should do the talking and the viewer will do the deciding. I would be more inclined to use the idea of a friend of mine and just leave “Post It” notes by each image so that the public can comment. One fear with that is that someone might write “don’t quit your day job” and since I don’t have a day job to go back to I might have to find alternative entertainment.
Anyway, I will invite those of you in the area to come to the reception for an evening of art and entertainment…the entertainment being ME! Until then I wish all of you the most blessed Christmas with all the trimmings.
Go, Baylor…….Sic ‘em Bears!
